The answers I've read here so far are not at all what I expected. I thought most people would really feel unkindly towards the proselytizers. It is good to see the kindness and tolerance extended towards those who have different beliefs and methods of encouragement, 8D
Personally, at one time it bothered me a great deal. Then, I just turned my thinking around and took it as an opportunity to meet new and interesting people. No one tried to force anything on me. They just wanted to share their ideas. One of the people who knocked at my door has become my dear friend.
They are following the model set by Jesus Christ, who preached to people of other beliefs and they are following command given to ALL Christians to preach.
The preaching work, as it was in Jesus' day, is to show how God's Kingdom is going to do away with the problems that have been plaging the earth and those who are causing the problems & not supporting God's right to rule. So it is a 2 fold work, educational-in that it informs people of what is needed to put themselves in line with choosing God's right to rule and 2nd a warning-in that it informs people that those not supporting God's right to rule will be destroyed.
And since lives are at stake, once you understand that ALL Christians are required to preach and that people need to be warned about what is coming, if you don't then you personally can be held blood guilty before God for not warning your fellowman.
So it is for your everlasting life and theirs, that they voluntarily and loving come to your door with their message.
Because, as Christians, we all are commanded to imitate our leader, Christ Jesus, and obey his commands, such as the one at Matthew 28:19,20.
The same reason LDS go door to door to spread the word.
i have had many visits by JWs, and never met or talked to anyone who attempted to force their religion down my neck. do you mean throat? I have been with baptist groups who went door to door with in their churches neighborhood. i think it is nice that strangers would want to check up on our future security for when we die and go to the next level. one can answer the door and be polite and say you arent interested in talking about religious subjects.
good marketing
Do they? I haven't seen any for years and years around here.
It's the way they practive their teaching of the bible. to spread the word, and hopefully covnert some1.
While I do think it is plenty overbearing and obnoxious, at least they aren't slaughtering non-believers like Muslim extremists.
I guess it is just their way of feeling they are serving their Lord as they believe.
Ignore them entirely and they WILL go away.
Because they follow what the Bible says, " while I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house"
Commenting on Acts 20:20,
Robertson's Word Pictures of the New Testament says:
"It is worth noting that this greatest of preachers preached from house to house"
To spread what they believe is the truth to as many people as possible.
I guess they like having dogs sicked on them. LOL
****** Special Note *******
Just Kidding ;-)
They can't fly
I suppose some people think it is their duty to do so. There are so many variations of religion it is inevitable a few will see the need for this sort of thing.
Whilst I don't really approve of this (I wouldn't go door to door proclaiming god doesn't exist, partly because it is none of my business what anyone else believes and partly because I have done door to door canvassing for elections and know it is a thankless task by and large) providing the organisation(s) takes "no and please don't bother me again thank you" as an answer I am not too bothered. Only takes a few seconds to politely say "go away please" after all.
If it persisted, then I may get bothered.
Because they know it's illegal to shoot them.
True christians are commanded to do the work of an Evangelizer and in these last days the ingathering of the great crowd must take place in other words someone has to do the job!
jesus commanded his disciples to follow in his footsteps and proclaim the good news of the kingdom. it is not that we necessarily go door to door out of something we made up in our minds, or because of a non-scriptural tradition such as all other religions do. whatever our practices are, we can always back them up with the bible. (matthew 24:14; 28:19,20) the preaching from door to door work is again a commandment left by jesus christ to follow by true christians. true, it is not easy. this is why many do not want to become witnesses for fear they will have comply with this requirement. however, as the person gains knowledge and his heart becomes filled with love and appreciation for what Jehovah God has done for them, what seemed to be a heavy burden at one time, now becomes a desire, to go out and express appreciation for the major sacrifice done on the person's behalf. going from door to door now becomes a desired activity in the person's life. i know i speak on behalf of all the christian Jehovah's Witness brotherhood that we consider it an honor to do this work. i take sheer delight after a long day of service to my God in the service ministry. nothing gives me greater pleasure, never do i feel more fulfilled as a human being. nothing compares to serving the God of the universe whole-heartedly and whole-souled in the greatest world-wide campaign of proclaiming his truths of the kingdom in human history. this work will soon end, and i for one am so grateful i have been able to partake in a share of this message.
there are a few vauge references in the Bible that call for Christians to "witness" or to spread God's word. different religions interpert that differently, so that you are suppose to always be preaching to others, some just when the opportunity presents itself.
I personally think that the ones that "force it down your neck" do more harm for their religion, and all religions for that matter, than they are doing good.
but that is just my take on it.
As a Christian, will you except my appology for their behavior? no strings attached!
How you "evangelise" stems from your belief system. If you are taught that this is a valid way to promote your beliefs, and that you are doing the right thing by God in doing it, you will.
However, it was never a Biblical method.
Because they just love to spout about god. I would like to know why, when they do go door-to-door, the whole family comes along - freaky.
(1 Peter 2:21) In fact, to this [course] YOU were called, because even Christ suffered for YOU, leaving YOU a model for YOU to follow his steps closely.
Its what Jesus did. door to door.
(Acts 5:42) And every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.
(Acts 20:20) while I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house.
(Matthew 28:19-20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU. And, look! I am with YOU all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”
Because they can't get in through the window.
(Acts 5:42) And every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.
(Acts 20:20) while I did not hold back from telling YOU any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching YOU publicly and from house to house.
Following Jesus' pattern...
(John 13:15) For I set the pattern for YOU, that, just as I did to YOU, YOU should do also.
come on...... think about it. a religion that goes door to door. lets think for a second. What did people do when selling things back in the day? go door to door. what do girl scouts and boy scouts do...go door to door. Now we have a religion that goes door to door? hmmmmmm seems like they need more believers. All in all I don't believe in any religion, Like I've said in other posts, were not meant to be separated into specific categories. We are all one and there is only one god. people need to wake up and see that religion was a made up story to get people to obey and was also a means of being controlled (brainwashing) so why do they go door to door? only god would know.
Times are critical and lives are hanging in the balance. Jesus taught and trained his followers to go and preach the word and baptize individuals who are responsive to the message. You can accept the message or you can refuse.
Jehovah's Witnesses go door to door because they are trying to do what Jesus Christ said to do. If you read your bible it states that we are supposed to witness to people. They are trying to do the right thing by spreading the word. No, I am not a Jehovah's Witness. I do have to say that I do respect that aspect of their religion.
Informing is not really shoving religion down anyone's throat. I would not do it myself but I have never seen a real case of forcing religion on anyone that says no thanks.
There are ways to avoid even the door to door religious people and that is a nice sign that Tells them your not interested. (I don't want anyone hunting on my land I have a sign that says no hunting). It is as simple as that.
Their belief system makes them believe they're doing you a favour. I have them knocking on my door from time to time and I find them ernest individuals who want to do good (as they see it).
Sometimes I'll stand there and debate the historical aspects of their religion, but I also find that if I'm polite and simply say 'Not today thank you', they leave, no doubt thinking 'You can't save them all.'
If you truly believe in something, and that belief was a matter of life and death to others, you would want to warn as many as possable. Jehovahs wittnesses are non intrusive and always treat others with respect!! Maybe we should take a leaf from their book and give the same respect back!! After all its so much harder to stand up for something you truly believe in, against popular opinion, than it is to put your head down and not stand at all!!
First of all, there is NOT ONE mention in the bible of going door to door. Many religions use other ways to preach the word of GOD..Some use radios, some use the internet, some use flyers, tv, ads etc…I have seen large scale amount of people who go to church because of this type of preaching.
Paul in the book of Acts while being in several cities did not ever go door to door but preached at the temples and markets. Allot of what many people do today. There is no mention of him doing what JW do…So are we to assume that because he didn’t go door to door that he wasn’t preaching the word of GOD.
So it’s a fallacy of reason of any JW to point fingers to other religions if they argue the door to door preaching. The word of GOD has many ways to be preach – door to door is their way (JW) and people use other ways. At the end it’s the WORD OF GOD
That is what Jesus taught his followers to do.
Going window to window gets them arrested.
That's the way they proselytize.
I have more respect for the ones that go door to door than the ones who just straight up damn me to hell. If they are respectful and are willing to listen to my atheist point of view as well I would give them props...
but all in all any kind of door-to-door activity be it religious or to sell me something annoys me.
Did not the apostles and Jesus go in the ministry? What did they teach about? It was to bring to the people the Good News of God's Kingdom. It is to help people learn about the purpose of Jehovah for man and the earth. That there is a wonderful future, something so much better than the current system of things that, as the Bible shows, is ruled by Satan. "The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one." It is the same pattern that was established in the first century...all Christians were commanded by Christ Jesus to "Go and make disciples of peoples of all the nations." Jesus himself set the pattern for all his followers to do this. It is out of mercy because lives are truly at stake. Jehovah says "do I desire the death of someone wicked and not that they should turn around in their ways and actually keep living?" Jehovah and Christ Jesus are full of undeserved kindness and mercy. We exercise our faith in the ransom of Christ Jesus and show love for mankind by imitating Christ Jesus in the ministry. It is vital that people listen to this good news and act on it before the great and fear inspiring day of Jehovah is instantly upon all those dwelling on the face of the earth. Listen to what it says here at Zephaniah 2:2,3.....(Zephaniah 2:2-3) Before [the] statute gives birth to [anything], [before the] day has passed by just like chaff, before there comes upon YOU people the burning anger of Jehovah, before there comes upon YOU the day of Jehovah’s anger, 3 seek Jehovah, all YOU meek ones of the earth, who have practiced His own judicial decision. Seek righteousness, seek meekness. Probably YOU may be concealed in the day of Jehovah’s anger. Listen next time they come to your door. It won't hurt you at all. The sayings of Jehovah are good.
to sell Amway products?
Because if its a nice day it gives them chance to strech their legs and have a gossip and a cuppa with other likeminded ladies. Its the not knowing if they will be invited in for a coffee or not that keeps them on their toes.
They're on commission
Where else are they going to go the street corners?
Ezekiel 3:17, 17 says: "Son of man, a watchman is what I have made you...When I say to someone wicked, ‘You will positively die,’ and you do not actually warn him and speak in order to warn the wicked one from his wicked way to preserve him alive, he being wicked, in his error he will die, but his blood I shall ask back from your own hand."
This is one of the reasons we preach from door to door. It is our duty as watchmen. We are trying to alert everyone of danger, while offering them a message of hope as well.
We do this because, as Jesus taught us, we love our neighbors - both far and near. No one is forcing anyone to listen or to accept the message. But, just as Ezekiel also tells us - it does not matter if they listen or not. It is still our duty.
To preach the good news to everyone who gives an ear.
So they can bother everyone equally and individually, of course! :3
we have been instructed to spread the good news of the kingdom (matthew 24:14), and we were also told to make disciples teaching them the message found in God's Word. (mathew 28:18,19)
How else do you sell vacuums?
It's called "cold calling".
;-)
Because they are following a command in the bible which says to go from house to house.
Because they are following the command in the bible by going from house to house
To get on my nerves!! I am a Christian!! I pray!! I have a church!! I even read the Bible sometimes!! I respect there opinion but they do not need to comee to my house every week preaching to me about how I am wrong and am going to hell!! Also they are always trying to get you to go to there church!! I have a church!! I am a good person!! They should just leave people alone!! They annoy people way more then they help!! And there relentless they go to everyones house on the street!! Most people just don't even bother answering the door if they know it is them!!
I was taught they were required to spread the word in this manner. The way I spread the word is totally different, but in these days and times, I'd rather be smart and not go from door to door. I catch more people just in my everyday traverse than going door to door in a neighborhood.
Please Don't confuse Jesus with Jehovah's witness'. Jesus never tried to force misconstrued beliefs down people's throats.
