Depends. Sometimes it's cool to be hot. Leathers are worn by bikers as a breathable protection. Regardless of the weather it is an enduring pleasure to see bikers in leather on the road in the summer :p

Pointless? What "point" are you trying to get across by wearing leather pants? They're pants, so wear them if you want. It's all about personal preference and comfort.
