I have played both. The flute would be a better choice. Piccolos don't get as many nice solos. Of course it would also depend on whether you're going to play with a marching band, stage band, or orchestra. I still would choose the flute. It's easier to play.

In My Opinion The Flute. it has a much more mellow sound.
-
I think flute. It is much more useful musically and doesn't attract dogs.LOL
-
Most probably flute as it's more common and easier to learn. It would be easier to learn flute first then go to piccolo than the other way around. Flutes get a consistent part in band music too, where piccolos have a LOT of rests to count =)
-
Definitely flute. The piccolo requires so much more air and breathing control that if you're a beginner, it's harder to last long before you start getting dizzy. Even on the flute, make sure to stop and rest if you get dizzy. You can switch to piccolo later, or if you're in a band you can play your flute while the piccolo has rests.
-
Piccolo just because it is not as popular as the flute and it may have a range of sound that is not as familiar to what people are used to.
-
It's better to start with flute, then move to piccolo once you're relatively good at flute.
-
Well, if you were going to start with one, I'd say the flute would be your best choice.
-
A piccolo. I don't know why.
-
a flute should be the one to learn on, and if you get really good, piccolo is the next step up. in an orchestra, piccolo is very, very important, and is usually played by the principal [first] flutist. so, flute is definitely for starters, and pic for more advanced musicians.

I like the sound of the piccolo more, although flute is easier. It has a more raw, unique and beautiful sounds. It's also more impressive to say, "I play the piccolo" than saying "I play the flute.", although the latter is also pretty impressive (in my opinion).
