Why do people still refer to Native Americans as Indians?

geez louise, who knows? i had a really funny exchange with my mother about it the other day though. my sister is married to an Indian, but my mom was talking about an Indian living in American as an 'Eastern American Indian' and I said no, it would just be 'Indian American' because the other nationality usually comes first (Columbian-American, Mex-American, etc.), but she said, no that'd be confused with American Indian (which is why she said Eastern), and I said, no, mom, that's Native American. geez. :)

Goes back to Christopher Columbus thinking he was in India. The "Indians" now refer to themselves as Native Americans or First Nation People but most Europeans descendants see call them Indian.
