  • Catfish with short whiskers, called "barbels", are scavengers. Their downturned mouths can only eat what they find on the bottom of the tank. They are great for cleaning up the leftover food that the fish topside didn't eat, thus reducing water pollution. They also prefer to be groups of two or more. They are very peaceful and are perfect for community tanks. Catfish with long barbels are more solitary...and preditory. They are dormant when the tank light is on, and go hunting as soon as it's dark. By contrast, most other species of tropical fish lay dormant in the dark, making them easy prey. Do not place a long barbeled catfish in a tank with fish smaller than he is.
