Forgiveness is only given to those that repent. In order to be forgiven of a sin you must do several things. First you must recognize that you have committed a sin. You must be sorry for that sin. You must make recompense for any damages that may have resulted from the sin. You must forsake the sin. Finally, you must ask for forgiveness. The important point here is the third requirement, making recompense. How do you make recompense for murder. Once you have taken a person's life, you can't give it back. Therefore, you can't complete the repentance process. Therefore the sin is unforgivably. ******************* John Pacella, It is definitely not my place to tell God whom He can or cannot forgive and for you to try to twist what I write to say that is a quite offensive. What I write is what we believe God has revealed through His prophets, not us telling God what to do. However, that written, perhaps I need to be a bit clearer on this point and say that we don't believe that forgiveness is possible for murder in this life. Murderers will receive some degree of reward in the eternities. Unlike those that commit blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, murders won't be consigned to the same fate as Satan and his angels. Just how much forgiveness a repentant murderer can receive in the next life is not entirely clear, but they also wont be able to receive the highest reward either. Either way, murderers will have to endure some level of punishment from God after they leave this life. In the 16th Psalm we read, "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption." It is my understanding that it is thought that this psalm was written after David had Uriah murdered. If this is the case then this can be taken as an acknowledgment on his part that he would have to spend time in hell, but that he would eventually be released from there. David was quite repentant after the fact. However, that did not mean that he would not have to suffer some punishment for this crime. ************* "Valparaiso: I see no scriptural support for forsaking the sin nor recompensing for the sin. Obviously one wants to do both for their own well being but I find no support that you can't be forgiven for committing the same sin twice." I know that our religions disagree on the place that works have in our salvation. However, I don't think that I ever said that we can't be forgiven for committing the same sin more than once. However, if we keep committing the same sin over and over again, we really say that we have repented of it? Again, I am not going to judge any man on this. I know that I am far from perfect. I think that the more important thing to God is that we just keep trying to do what He asks of us. If we keep trying, then His grace is sufficient to make up for any and all of our short comings. It is when we give up and stop trying that we are in trouble.

In response to God's love for me and what he has done for me through Christ I gladly try to live my life as he would like me to. As always, I fall short. Thanks be to God for his gift of salvation freely given to me through Christ Jesus's Death and Resurrection. It is not because I am trying to "save" myself or to be exalted to the highest level in the Celestial Kingdom. This seems like it could easliy lead into doing good for personal gain NOT out of love for Christ and one another. If saying murder is a sin that Christ can not forgive, then his Death on the Cross (where the atonement occured) is diminished of its power. Jesus is God. He forgives ALL Sin. The Bible says there is only one unforgiveable sin and that is the sin against the Holy Spirit. To say God can not forgive a murderer is to limit his love and mercy towards his children, which I would hope you do not mean to do. Repentance is the act of acknowledging your sin before God in prayer and then asking him for forgiveness. If a murder truly turns from his wickedness, accepts Christ as his Savior and repents, the Bible tells us he is forgiven through Christ. Nothing we do can earn our forgiveness. The Bible is quite clear on this subject.

I believe there is only ONE unforgivable sin. That would be not accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior, and becoming a born again Christian. The Bible tells us,(and why believe any of the Bible if you dont believe all of it), that "Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved". "Whosoever" to me, means everyone, including, but not limited to, murderers. But that is just my belief. That is why He gave us "free will", to make our own desicions about what we believe.

this doesn't answer the question.. but.. before you ask the Lord for forgiveness.. could you forgive yourself for the murder..? how can you ask God to forgive you.. when you, yourself can not..

Murder can be forgiven!! Do you recall the man hanging on the cross next to Jesus? a sinner...many believe was a murderer. Luke 23 32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."[e] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One." 36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." 38There was a written notice above him, which read:|sc THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" 40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." 42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[f]" 43Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." I know there are two unforgiven sins denying Christ and blasphamy of the Holy Spirit. Passage Matthew 12:31-32: 31And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. Luke 12:10 "Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But anyone who speaks evil things against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven

Murder is forgiveable. There are many Christians in history who were murderers, but repented of their sins and were forgiven by the death of Christ. However, all sins carry consequences on earth, and it may be that, even though forgiven by Christ, the murderer will have to face an earthly court and be dealt the justice of the country he/she lives in. I have heard that some of those who are executed each year repent before they die, and are taken to be with the LOrd in glory, but even they still admit they had to be executed, for the families of those they murdered to know justice and closure.

There is only one sin that cannot be forgiven and that is rejecting the gift of God meaning not asking Jesus into your heart to save you from your sin. He will forgive you if you murder someone (even though I dont suggest you do that) Jesus own deciple killed someone and then repented and became a follower of Jesus. He was used in a big way for God. The bible says that he will remove our sin from us and will remember it no more. If God cant forgive us for murder then he can't forgive us for anything because a sin is a sin in Gods eyes. He said that if you hate someone you have commited the sin of murder in your heart.

Read all the doctrine in the other posts if this interest you and is not just an inflammatory question. But, the question is flawed, composed of a mixture of doctrines and is non-sensical. A common mistake.

Murder is just as sinful as lying. If you murder someone you can be forgiven. To be forgiven you have to be truly repentant, only then will you be forgiven. People sin all the time, and most the time they commit the same sin, but if you truly repent of the sins you commit, God sees your Heart and sees that you are truly repentant and will forgive you, and cast your sins as far as the East is from the West. When you repent, however it is telling God that you will try your best to not sin this same sin again, ever. We do make mistakes, but God is there to catch us, forgive us when we ask for forgiveness, and pick us back up on our feet to start anew. The only sins that you can commit, are 1) Not accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior, and trying to live the life GOD has provided for you, and 2) Accepting the Mark of the Beast, for any who accept this will burn in hell.

Murder is never listed as an unforgiveable sin. There is only one sin that Jesus calls unforgiveable: Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit 22 will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. Matthew 12:31-32. The meaning of "blaspheming against the Holy Spirit" has often been the source of a lot of anxiety amongst people (Have I committed it? what if I have and I don't know?) and a lot of poor explanations, but when you look at it in context, Jesus is responding to the words ""This man drives out demons only by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons." In other words, Jesus is saying "You are calling the work of God, the work of the devil." It is this horrific accusation that is unforgiveable. But murder? 1) the apostle Paul was an accessory before and after the fact (Acts 7:57, 58 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him (Stephen), 58dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.") 2) David was a murderer (killed Uriah the husband of Bathsheba to hide their adultery) and many others. Murder is a horrible thing, but forgiveable. Here on earth, we may have to live with the consequences of our sins (in the case of murder, we might have to go to prison, even be executed), but, if we are sincerely sorry to God for the murder and turn our lives over to Him, then He forgives.

All sin can be forgiven but only if the sinner is willing to "turn around" and repent of his former sins and life course, and then live his life in harmony with God's word, The Bible. However, this does not absolve the person from having to pay the price with regard to society.

I think that in order to answer this question we have to ask what is meant by "murder" (not a proper noun) and what is meant by forgiveness. If I kill a man in defense of my family, is that murder? If I execute a man who had broken a law condemning him to death, is that murder? What if the man was actually innocent? Clearly, in the scriptures, there are a number of people who killed and yet went on to be spiritual giants. The only thing that we clearly know about murder, is that it is possible for a killing to be unforgivable, in a sense. Glenn's description of what is meant by that seems accurate. To reiterate, it does not mean that the murderer's soul spends eternity in hell, it means that some measure of time must be spent in a purgation (not a common LDS term, but I use it because it is akin to the Catholic idea of purgatory) and that afterward, a fullness of glory is still not attainable. We generally do not know why this is so, but there are a few possible explanation I won't get into. We do not believe that all people who have ever killed cannot be forgiven. Fortunately, we are not the final judges of our fellow man, but rather God is.

its not the only unforgivable sin is denyng Him, look at Paul, he murdered, he was forgiven

Murder is not an unforgivable sin.

First, it should be noted that asking a question such as this on answerbag will normally get many answers which are not what Mormons believe, but rather what others believe, which really should be noted in the answers but is usually not. Unfortunately there are too many others out there that would like to give the answers of what Mormons believe without asking Mormons themselves. This entire question seems to be based on error, trying to suggest by the asking of it, that it is what we believe, and directed not as a serious inquiry into our beliefs but rather as an attack against our beliefs. However, it should be pointed out that Mormons do NOT believe that murder is unforgivable as suggested by this question. However, because restitution is not possible in this life, it is usually requisite to finish this repentance when we meet our Savior after this life, but with Jesus as our Savior, all is possible. Personally I would think that in order to be forgiven of this, the person would have to be VERY sorry and give all they could to repent for as long as they were permitted to remain in this life. As stated by Joseph Smith: Murders “cannot be forgiven, until they have paid the last farthing.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 189). I am not about to decide what that means exactly, but the fact that he said it cannot be forgiven, 'UNTIL', means that it in fact could be forgiven at some point. These are cases best left to our Lord and Savior himself. I noticed that the person that asked this question also answered it, stating that the sin against the Holy Spirit is the only unforgivable sin, which is correct as Mormons believe. In fact, his entire answer is very close to what we believe since we also do NOT believe that we can save ourselves, we can only be saved through the atonement and grace (another discussion entirely) of Jesus, our Savior. Jesus is my personal Savior. He has paid for my sins and those of all others and by his grace, I can be saved.

I never heard of that one before. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the one I heard about and even that one has been misunderstood. Read the story of the Prodigal son, since the son was always the son and the father was always the father. I think it applied to all of us. Click on my avatar if you want more context.

There is nothing like this in the Bible. The only sin that is NOT forgiven is the sin against the Holy Spirit. Against direct orders of God. those guilty of this will not be resurrected. Example...Adam and Eve...Genesis 2; 16,17...they ate of the tree in direct disobedience to what God said. Judas Escariot..hje betrayed Jesus. Uzzah....he tried to stop the Ark of the Covenant from toppling off the wagon...when he knew it should NEVER have been placed on a wagon...God wanted it ALWAYS carried ON POLES....2 SAMUEL 6;3-6 People who commit murder of another person WILL be resurrected...because their deaths have PAID for their sins/ shortcomings/ mistakes... (Romans 6:23) For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord. Wages is always full payment. So our death is FULL payment for all our sins...

To me murder is unforgiveable and how Christians can claim that those who do not believe in Jesus as their saviour will go to Hell and damnation and a murderer will end up in Heaven because he repented I cannot imagine. There is something fundamentally wrong in this belief.

God forgave David didn't HE???when he calculatingly had Bathsheba's husband killed because he had slept with her and gotten her pregnant!!!! HE punished David and Bathsheba by taking that child!!!! (sure HE took the baby to HIM) and Solomon HE later blessed them with after punishing and forgiving them, became of Jesus lineage!!! via Jesus ,all sins are FORGIVEABLE if asked Forgiveness in EARNEST....EXCEPT the UnFORGIVEABLE of DENYING who and what the Holy Spirit is.........:)justme P.S. all Commandments are forgiveable ,IF made right by us to God....but the most important one to KEEP is the 5th...HONOR THY MOTHER AND FATHER/ do RIGHT by them...if they do RIGHT and have done RIGHT by U!!! this does not mean if ur Dad or mom has gambled his/home away or drank up their money....help when they do RIGHT....but don't leave them for others to responsible for ...especially a church alms.....these are to help those with no family:widows, orphans and unfortunate...:)justme

Murder can be forgiven, the only unpardonable sin is blasphamy against the holy spirit.

Perhaps you could show me one scripture which says Jesus came to pay for ALL of the sins of those who believe? All I have read says Jesus came to suffer for the sins of all mankind! One can clearly see that Jesus did not pay for ALL sins, when he himself stated..Matt.12;31,32.."Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come." It is clear, there are some sins for which the Atonement does not cover. And therefore Christ did not come to pay for ALL our sins, but did come to,pay for THE sins of ALL of mankind, if they repent and have their sins washed away through Baptism, and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, by the laying on of hands, by one holding the proper Priesthood from God...Later

David committed murder and was forgiven. All repented sins are forgiven.Paul committed murder and was forgiven. So where do you get it can't be forgiven?
-
Mormons do not believe that Christ's death paid for any sins including murder. Traditional Christianity believes that Christ's death pays for any sin including murder, assuming the sinner claims the blood of Christ as his ransom from sin.
-
I have heard a couple different versions of what the unforgivable sin is by a couple of different christian preachers. One interprets it to be suicide because you cannot ask for forgiveness after you die and the other said that the unforgivable sin was denying god as the one true god. I guess it all depends on the interpretation.+4

Mormons are not Christian. Did I clear that up?
-
Its not.
-
Murder can be forgiven…
-
That is a false Statement. Saul which God gave him the name Paul after being converted to Christian who wrote most of the New Testament was a Christian killer and He forgave him. So Murder is NOT an unforgivable sin.
-
Who said murder cannot be forgiven? It can't be reversed, and people may be unable to forgive (and I can't blame them for that), but that does not mean God cannot or will not forgive murder. There is mention of an unforgivable sin, but it's not murder.
