I reckon free-diving is about the most extreme you can do. Descending over 200m with no breathing apparatus, experiencing crushing pressures of more than 20 atmospheres, in dark, freezing cold, oppressive water and knowing that you are unable to take a breath for more than 7 minutes or esle you will drown is terrifying to me. And then, the techniques needed to get to those depths require you to clear your blood of carbdon dioxide, which means that whilst you are huge distances from the surface and rescue, you may very easily pass out whilst underwater, with no available help at all. Result - a very watery grave. I'm not going to be competing anytime soon.
