A number of factors contributed to their popularity in the US. The band was formed at the beginning of the counter-culture era in the 1960s and became a part of it through the musical venues they played and the people they, their crew, and their associates socialized with, including well-known luminaries of the day like Ken Kesey. Their music and activities were deeply in 'tune' with the tune in, turn on, and drop out culture. People moved in and out of the band, crew, and associate circles, spreading their music and message further. A large part of their profits were driven back into hardware development to extend the band's capabilities. They helped support the foundation of the company Alembic, which designed, built, and supplied a great deal of the equipment they used over the years. And finally, they toured like just about no other band has ever toured, having played thousands of gigs by the time Jerry Garcia passed away. Mellow, cool, and slightly spaced out.
