If you could add a new class to the public school system, what would it be? What would be the basic curriculum and at what age would it be taught? Would it replace an existing class?

I think adding religion as a class would do fine. Not for the intention to convert anyone to any religion, just so people can get different points of view from a diverse population of people. It would not replace any class, and I don't think it should be mandatory either. Some people might get highly offended hearing about a religion, that goes against their beliefs, so it should be optional to the pupil.

My course is more for college. But a honors program at a high school could teach the basics of what I have listed. Hip-Hop Culture 101-111 101. Hip-Hop Culture: History of Hip-Hop 102. Logic. Understanding syllogisms, fallacies, and basic reasoning skills should be manditory. Math classes teach logic, but since it is done purely in the context of numbers, it is far too abstract for most people to grasp. When I was in elementary school and middle school, I was in the gifted program. They taught us formal reasoning from the beginning. I remember thinking- "why aren't they teaching this to all the kids? If we are gifted and they are not, don't they need this even MORE than we do?" ALL people think, so all people need to understand HOW to think. If more people had a grasp of logic the world would be a better place.

I would teach other languages to children in elementary school, and teach them to be bilingual. In the US we have a dreadfully uni-lingual society, and I think it is increasingly necessary to speak more than one language.

I would like to have a mandatory class of Common Sense. Another course would be studies in internationl cultures and traditions so that we grow up more tolerant and understanding of others. (An international exchange program would be very helpful.)
