What does the little "[x]" following some comments mean? If I click on it I'm invited to log in, even though I already am.

That [x] symbol is a function that allows a user to delete comments. You can only delete comments that were authored by you, so in the case where you attempted to click on it and it asked you to log in was probably because you tried to delete someone else's comment.
