I think that to graduate you should have to know the material and score well on the test to prove it.

Whats the point of them handing you a piece of paper saying you graduated if it doesnt mean you know anything? What use would high school diplomas be if all they stood for was that you showed up? No, i think that you should have to pass your classes and tests to graduate.

The real world doesnt give points for effort.

Effort should not be graded. You're not rewarded, after school, in how hard you try. You're rewarded based on results.
These kids have to learn the realities of life after school, and that's that effort will only get you so far. In order to be successful in life, not only do you have to try, but you have to succeed.

There is too much put into academic achievement and not enough on practical education. In Texas they have the TAKS test. If a student does not pass the test they cannot proceed and the teacher is demoted or fired. This requires the teacher to teach only what is required for the student to pass the test and learn little else.
The best example I can give against such tests is some students fail miserably in academics but that same person can pick up an auto repair manual and read and comprehend everything there. This student can repair almost anything on an automobile but he can tell you nothing about quantum theory! Is this student dumb or does he/she think in different terms? This same thing happened in the 1950s when everything was done on the academic scale and nothing on the practical knowledge scale. We had the “man in the gray flannel suit” who knew how to do the academics but had no knowledge of how to repair his car soon there were few whom knew how to fix the car but they could sure write about how bad things were!
Education should teach not only the academics but also the practical and how to include the effort. We can’t all be egg-heads. By the way I was a teacher in the days when practical education was still considered important.

    Test results!!
0% Should be based on effort. I'm sorry but if you write 10 pages of total crap, nobody can say you haven't made the effort... That doesn't stop what you wrote from being total crap, So you don't deserve a good grade.

What's that old saying... it's about Quality not Quantity

Effort counts for nothing. Giving marks for effort just gives some of the kids false confidence.

No. In the real world if you continue to work your butt off on projects and fail at them, you'll be unemployed.
