Change the filter. Having a dirty, wet, or clogged filter will cause the central air unit to work even harder to push air through a dirty filter. The filters themselves cost only a couple dolars and in most instances, are easy to change.

Tip number two, after you've taken care of your filters, is to look at the compressor, outside unit. Bushes or trees that keep it shaded, particularly in the afternoon, are good. If they in any way restrict free airflow all around, they're bad and should be trimmed back. And if the fins for cooling the condenser are dirty, hose them down. Just do it in a way that doesn't force water anywhere it doesn't go when it rains.
