Dilation relates to the opening of the cervix and effacement relates to the softening of the cervix. The cervix opens and becomes completely effaced, or thin, at birth. Timing of dilation and effacement varies from one pregnancy to the next and it is usually difficult to predict labor based on these measurements provided by a physician or nurse.
