Daniel 9:3 "And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes"

Sackcloth is rough cloth like burlap. Wearing clothes made of such rough stuff, smearing ashes on oneself and fasting are ways of doing penance for sin and asking forgiveness or of making sacrifice and asking favor.
