  • It depends... If girl is young and has just started menstruating she can expect your periods to take a while to become regular. If a girl (or woman) is underweight and/or very athletic, she might also miss periods. There's also a chance that a girl (or woman) might be pregnant (assuming she's had sex). Sometimes pregant women appear to have irregular periods which are actually spotting. There's also a chance that the cause might be some other health problem - some serious, some easily cured. Whatever the case, I would recommend that someone having an irregular cycle talk to a gynecologist to rule out anything abnormal.
  • My menstrual cycle has never been regular, but it went really wacky when I lost alot of weight. After dropping some 60 lbs, during a period of about a year, my menstrual cycle took a break for about 18 months. It only returned once I had gained back some 20 lbs of the lost weight. Your body does not realloy want you to go through something as calorically intensive as pregnancy if it is not sure that you are starving. There are other reasons why women have irregular menstrual cycles, and most of them have to do with the health of your reproductive organs. If you are quite sure it is not pregnancy, you might want to get checked out for possible causes of your cycle's irregularity, such as endometriosis which is a gynocological disorder where a piece of your uterinary tissue (endometrium) becomes attached somewhere outside the uterus (such as in your tubes or on an ova). This can cause severe pain and very irregular menstruation. You can find out more about endometriosis at http://www.endometriosisassn.org/. You should visit your ob/gyn regularly and they can help you learn more about your reproductive health!
  • Sometimes when there is no serious pain you may need to worry even more. I am 24 and a mother of two. I went a month with no period, I was testing negative on pregnancy tests. Finally when it came it was so irregular. Sometimes even twice a month and sometimes just once but would be either early or late. I went to the doctor and his reply was that he was more worried because there was no pain. Come to find out I had cancer. If I would have waited 3 months longer, I would have had to gone through Chemo therapy. Thank God my mom made me go! No matter what, I believe a physician should come into the picture. Better to be safe then sorry. No doctor is going to look at you and tell you that you should have not of made an appointment. Not now a days. Like I said better safe than sorry.
