Help answer this question below.
Parakeets may enjoy some of the contents of wild bird food, which contains a greater variety of seeds, including sunflower seeds, which are not often included in parakeet seed mix. There is nothing immediately toxic in wild bird food, according to Avian Web, though there may be some unhealthy contents.
A parakeet may not die from eating wild bird food once or twice, but as a long-term diet, wild bird food is not good for the parakeet. It may contain high-fat seeds such as sunflower seeds, which can lead to health problems as the bird grows older. Also, wild bird feed does not undergo the same rating standards as parakeet feed, which must contain seeds that are still able to sprout, according to Avian Web.
While you can feed a parakeet wild bird food without it being immediately toxic, experts recommend sticking to pet-grade quality seeds. Also, parakeets do need a more diverse diet than just seeds and should be eating fruits, vegetables and bee pollen, all of which are included in many parakeet feed mixes.
