Parkinson's disease gets worse over time. According to the Hoehn and Yahr staging of Parkinson's disease, the condition progresses through five recognizable stages. In the first stage, the disease only affects one side of the body. By the fifth stage the patient is confined to a wheelchair or bed and is at risk for any number of life-threatening complications such as choking and falls. No two people with Parkinson's will go through exactly the same stages at exactly the same times. Some people survive for decades with only minimal neurological deficits, whereas others decline dramatically in the space of a few years. Factors that can affect how quickly the disease progresses include age of onset, co-existing health conditions and use of medication to control symptoms. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders has determined that the average life expectancy for people with Parkinson's is the same as the average life expectancy for people without Parkinson's. Many Parkinson's patients live for years or even decades with their disease. On One Hand: Parkinson's Disease is Progressive
On the Other: Parkinson's Disease Differs from Person to Person
