My brother used to wear a steel bar between plastercasts on his legs. My parents simply used to phone airports in advance and we never ever queued. If you are going someone nice, like a park or sightseeing, call ahead to them too, they will almost always give you VIP treatment. Children who tire more easily, suffer higher amounts of pain than others, or can't stay out for so long because of ill health should be at the front of the queue for fun, where it can be had!
It will almost certainly set off the alarm. But airports have procedures for this sort of thing - there are a number of people who cannot help setting off alarms, usually for medical reasons. Call them and ask what you should do. Do this well in advance - don't leave it to the last. You will probably find that you manage to skip the queues - a tiny benefit from a sad situation.
I don't know for sure but I would call the airport in advance and explain your situation and ask them what measures you should take at the security checkpoints if the alarms do go off. Perhaps a note from your doctor explaining the device he has to wear, etc. might help also if you were to get stopped.

You're reading My 10 year old son wears a severley rigid steel boned corset from buttocks to underarm for spinal condition. It must be worn very tight 23 hours a day without loosening or removal. Will the steels set off airport alarms and if they do what do we do?
