Mathematically the earth is flat - or to be more precise, a level surface, which sounds like flat. A level surface is a formula such that f(x,y,z) = 0 and it's not hard to find a formula for a sphere. An oblate spheroid is a little harder. and if you're worried about mountains, the earth is smoother than a billiard ball.
