    Once the Pope is elected by the Cardinals, the Pope is allowed to choose his own official name. He will usually choose a name from a previous Pope, thereby implying that his time as Pope will result in similar teachings as the previous Pope. If the new Pope chooses a new name, then he is likely to strike off in a (relatively) new direction with his teachings.
