    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

A dentist prevents, diagnoses and treats health problems inside the mouth. She also provides advice to her patients, such as brushing, flossing and using fluorides.

    Duties

According to Collegeboard.com, a dentist examines the mouth area for abnormalities; finds and fills cavities; uses tools and equipment, such as X-ray machines, scalpels and drills; wears masks, gloves and safety glasses; and supervises a staff of assistants and technicians. Many dentists are solo practitioners who run their own office and take on business duties.

    Salary

According to the May 2008 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Employment and Wage data, a general dentist earned a median salary of $142,870 a year.

    Employment

According to the BLS May 2008 data, offices of dentists employed the most general dentists and provided an average salary of $156,930. Other places that employed large numbers of dentists were as follows: offices of physicians; the state government; outpatient care centers; and general medical and surgical hospitals.

    Environment and Hours

A dentist's office is well-lit and sterile. Most dentists work in their own offices and design an environment based upon personal preference. According to the BLS, most dentists work four or five days per week. Some work evenings and weekends to accommodate their patients' schedules. Most full-time dentists work 35 to 40 hours.

    Education

According to the BLS, all dentists are required to be licensed which means graduating from an accredited dental school and passing an examination. Dental schools require a minimum of two years of college-level education before admittance into a program; however, most candidates have a bachelor's degree. Dental school lasts four years.
