not a soloist. i have heard of a session drummer. they don't drum for a particular band but they drum for who ever asks them to play drums for them. they earn a lot more money than drummers in bands and are a lot beter than the drummers in bands as they may be asked to drum for lots of different styles of music. they so a lot of solo work, with lots of clinics all over the world showing and teaching their skills. some examples are: thomas lang (voted best drummer in the world), johnny rabb, jason bowld.

Yes. Terry Bozzio uses an "orchestra" kit for his chamber works. He is a drummer who plays concerts by himself (solo).
