Dandruff is a condition that causes itching and flaking of the scalp, but doesn't usually cause hair loss. In some cases, dandruff can happen as an allergic reaction to certain shampoos and hair products. It can usually be treated with a medicated shampoo with sulfur or triclosan.
When a hair follicle dies, it's impossible for any more hair to grow from it. This causes hair thinning which may lead to balding, and scalp irritation sometimes occurs when follicles close up as well.
When a woman is pregnant, her hair doesn't grow at the normal rate; the hair sheds more quickly, which makes for thinner hair and balding in some extreme cases. But the hair will return after pregnancy.
If the body is not getting enough protein or iron, the scalp can become irritated, and hair loss can occur. Taking a multivitamin or eating more leafy green vegetables can help to correct this problem.
There are a number of prescription medications for conditions like depression or high blood pressure, such as Elavil (an antidepressant) and Crestor (a statin to lower blood pressure), that can cause dermatitis and hair loss. Hair loss is usually not permanent, and will return after the medicine is not being used.
