Nothing much happened until Newton and a century
later Cauchy. Four threads of inequalities emerged in the first eight
decades of the 19th century. In the last two decades several inequalities
were proved that had names attached to them and these inequalities began
to be considered part of the basic knowledge of analysts.
Beginning in the third decade of this century,
Hardy and some of his collaborators began to develop a systematic study
of inequalities.
