As the electronics world has gone digital, older analogue forms of entertainment such as movies and music, and the devices that play them, go unused. But, before you simply throw out those stacks of recorded VHS tapes, know that it is possible to transfer them to DVD, with the right equipment. The simplest and most efficient way to transfer from VHS to DVD is with a VCR-DVD recorder combination unit. With this device, you need only to insert the tape and a blank DVD, and press "Play" on the VCR half and "Record" on the DVD recorder. To transfer using separate components, the first piece of equipment needed is a VCR, to play the tapes you wish to convert. A DVD recorder is also required, to copy the VHS tape onto a blank DVD once the VCR is connected to the recorder. A television is another necessity, not only to watch video from either of the components, but also to monitor progress of the recording, to know when to press "Stop" when finished and to see that the DVD recorded properly. As another option, the VCR can also be connected to a computer equipped with a video capture card, video editing software and DVD burner drive to transfer, store and record the video onto DVD. Along with the tapes to play and the blank DVDs to record onto, the proper cables are needed to connect the devices, usually three-pronged (yellow for video, red and white for audio) composite RCA cables to connect the VCR to the DVD recorder, and the same or S-video, coaxial cable, HDMI or component cables to send the signal to the TV, or RCA/S-video to USB for the computer.VCR-DVD Recorder Combo
