Because of the security clearances needed to gain admission to a military base, the functions that it serves may seem mysterious. Military bases serve a variety of purposes, from training to vehicle storage. Military bases usually provide some form of housing for those stationed there. This includes gyms, churches and recreational facilities like parks and athletic courts. Military bases also house equipment like military vehicles. They can also store vast quantities of military supplies---these sections of a base are generally heavily restricted. Bases themselves don't necessarily restrict their occupants or visitors. Fort Bragg in North Carolina, for example, hosts over 10,000 family members and almost 10,000 civilians. They may also offer temporary lodging for visitors. In addition to living accommodations, soldiers on the base are able to take advantage of training facilities. Bases may also be used as testing grounds for new equipment. Most bases rely on the outside community to function, though others are almost completely self-sufficient. In either case, they are a boon to the local economy, bringing both jobs and money to the area. The Military Zone: Military Bases The Military Zone: Fort Bragg, NCLiving Facilities
