  • "GERD" is hard to treat sometimes. Talk to your doctor! Tell him the pills are not working as well now, and he can change pills or maybe have you tested to see if something else is going on. Don't just try to self treat. Your doctors are the experts. Stay away from dairy and protein because they are acid forming, hard to digest and will cause bloating and gas and acid production. Also high fat foods are bad - slow to digest and acid producing.
  • There is soooo much!!!! My husband suffers from "GERD" which has caused Barretts Esophagusto develop. LISTEN to your DOCTOR!!!!! That is my husbands biggest problem. He finds out what is wrong, but does not follow directions from the doctor's. Sorry, besides the point. What helps him is eating small meals and not over-indulging, not laying down for at least three hours after eating. We have also raised the head of his bed by 3-4 inches. (he sleeps in another room) He has to stay away from spicy foods (he can't eat any). Greasy foods are bad, ie...pork ribs, sloppy joes, very seldom foods fried in oil. Carbonated beverages and coffee are also good to stay away from. Tell your doctor right away that the meds are no longer helping, there are many others. Go to Webmd, they have a lot of information.
  • i want to be helpful,so please pardon my stupidity. all my life i have suffered with acid reflux.(i am a devout beer drinker and yeast is no good for you) i have tried everything available and the only thing that works best for me is ACIPHEX. milk is no good.vanilla icecream is very helpful. do not sleep on your back.potatoes are especially bad and so are all types of beans.never eat any food that contains any trace of coconut.funny but hot peppers are helpful.water is my enemy.in 15 years,i did not drink 75 gallons of water.water gives gives me heartburn. at all times,avoid tea.do not drink orange or punch soda.go to bed 3 hours after meals and avoid bending down to work after you've had your meal.if your pc is slow,you need to upgrade.stress is a major cause of acid reflux.don't let anyone bother you.try to relax as much as you can.acid reflux can ruin your life. i am awaiting your reply.
  • Number 1. Forget what your Dr says (They live 10 years less than the average and are only sales reps for big pharma!). Number 2. Cut out soda drinks, coke etc as they dilute the acid in your stomach. Number 3. You need to increase the Hydrocloric acid in your stomach so it breaks down the food better - indigestion is just that - un digestion. What happens is that the food does not get digested properly so you take mylanta etc which weakens the acid and sets your stomach up for failure when the next lot of food goes into it. Carefully try Hydrocloric Acid tablets (Great for lowering blood pressure also - so if you are on meds for high blood pressure be careful). Water is great as long as it doesn't have any 'nasties' in it (Clorine, flouride etc).
  • My doctor advises no eating or drinking at least 2 hours before bedtime. The reason is that lying down with acid (even acid diluted by water) in your stomach allows it to flow UPwards so that it sloshes into your esophagus and does damage. Some who do this wake up with a sore throat. Others have more serious complications. There is even a type of snoring and sleep apnea that can be caused by lying down to sleep with a stomach that is too full of undigested food or water. Don't do this to yourself. Stay vertical for two hours after supper. Don't eat late. Don't drink water through the night. You'll sleep better!
