The forklift operator must perform a daily pre-shift inspection of the forklift. The checklist should include the horn, lights, tires, forks, seat belts (if present), and a visual inspection to see if there are fluid leaks.
A forklift operator should know the safety protocols that accompany basic operation, as well as have a firm grasp of what to do in case of an accident or if the forklift tips over.
The forklift operator should know how to perform basic driving maneuvers such as driving forward (forks angled slightly upward when no load is present), driving in reverse (sound the horn, look both ways, proceed slowly), and going around a corner (stop, sound the horn, proceed slowly).
When driving up a ramp, the load should be tilted slightly downward; and when driving down a ramp, the load should be tilted slightly upward.
The forklift operator should know how to move loads onto and off of a truck. Truck tires should have wheel chalks in front of them.
The forklift operator should be able to demonstrate his knowledge of how each lift works and how to place a stock pallet onto a rack.
