    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Mental health care professionals recommend inpatient alcohol abuse treatment when a patient requires more care than he can receive on an outpatient basis. Medicare covers inpatient alcohol abuse treatment when it is deemed medically necessary. Medicare includes several components: Part A covers inpatient hospital care, Part B covers outpatient care, Part C includes several private Medicare approved health plans and Part D covers prescription drugs.

    Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care, including mental health care and alcohol abuse treatment. It covers hospital rooms, meals, nursing services and many other components of inpatient care.

Coverage for Inpatient Alcohol Abuse Treatment

Medicare covers inpatient alcohol abuse treatment the same way it covers other inpatient hospital care. In 2010, you pay a deductible of $1,100 for up to 60 days for each benefit period. You pay $275 each day for days 61 to 90. You pay $550 each day for days 91 to 150. You pay all costs beyond 150 days.

    What's Not Covered

Medicare does not cover private duty nursing, even if ordered by your doctor. It only covers a private room if it is medically necessary. It does not cover things like a television in your room or personal care items such as toiletries.

    Facilities

Most general hospitals accept Medicare, and some private hospitals do. Check with any facility before admission to make sure they accept Medicare for inpatient treatment.

    Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C includes a number of private Medicare approved health plans. Most cover inpatient alcohol abuse treatment, but the coverage varies from plan to plan.
