<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Soy Works Similarly to Propecia
A study published in the April 2004 Biology of Reproduction journal by a team of researchers led by Colorado State University uncovered that soy contains isoflavanoids that break down into equol in the body. Equol can block the testosterone DHT, which is linked with male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Prescription drug Propecia also works by blocking DHT, and has been proven an effective treatment for hair loss.
On the Other: Soy Cannot Solve All Hair Loss Problems
DHT, however, doesn't cause all hair loss problems, and therefore, soy cannot solve them all. Abnormal hormones, mental or physical stress, mental disorders, autoimmune disease, chemotherapy and fungal infection are a few of the other causes of hair loss.
Bottom Line
If you have hair loss that is treatable with Propecia, give soy a try. It's cheaper than a prescription drug, has many other important nutrients and is high in protein. However, if you are losing hair and you don't know why, try to get an accurate diagnosis. If it's not androgenetic alopecia, soy won't work for you.
