    What is the Connection Between Mind and Body?

Great thinkers like Hobbs and Aristotle subscribed to these ideas and taught that the mind was simply a bodily function---which is why many of our daily routines are like second nature.

    The Dualistic Theory

    The dualistic theory says that the mind is made of something other than a physical substance. Psychologists believe that the mind and body interact with one another and have to 'get along' in order for you to think clearly and act accordingly.

    The Theory of Epiphenomenalism

    Scientists that believe in the theory of epiphenomenalism teach that the mind is actually a byproduct of the physical brain---which means that the mind and the brain are slightly different. The brain is part of the body, but the mind is the 'picture' that you see when the brain is turned on, so in order to keep the mind in its best shape, the brain must be taken care of with physical exercise and diet.

    Think Well; Feel Well

    It's a known fact that mental illness has physical symptoms---when a person is depressed, he or she may not feel like eating, and may experience headaches and muscle pain. Likewise, when a person has experienced a severe physical illness such as cancer or amputation, a doctor will recommend therapy sessions so that the patient can maintain mental stability while restoring body's normal function.

    Mind Body Partnership

    In order to keep the mind and body working together in the proper balance, take time for physical activity every day---walk a few blocks after dinner or join your local gym. Taking time for meditation or yoga, as well as spending time with loved ones, will help to calm the nervous system so that physical movement will be more enjoyable.

    New ideas concerning the mind-body partnership are being discovered every day. But no matter which theory is most logical to you, remember that your thought process could keep you from experiencing a number of physical ailments, since you'll be more motivated to become active and to make sound health decisions.
