  • While static is a common complaint among people with thin or fine hair, static electricity buildup during the dry winter months can annoy people with any type of hair. Wearing hats, being in the wind and having naturally dry hair can worsen the situation. Thankfully, there are several easy steps, using professional products and items around the house, that you can take to reduce how your hair responds to static.

    Conditioning

Condition with a deep conditioner once or twice a week, leaving it on your hair for three to five minutes before rinsing. Use a light conditioner each time you wash your hair to keep it from becoming too dry, either in the form of a rinse in the shower or a leave-in conditioner used after showering. Use a detangler spray instead of conditioner if your hair is excessively weighed down by normal conditioner.

    Styling

Avoid excessive use of hair care products that are high in alcohol, such as hair sprays and gels. Opt for more moisture-rich options such as a conditioning mousse or hair pastes for hold. Use heat-styling tools sparingly. Tools like hair dryers and flat irons dry out hair and make your locks more prone to static fly-aways. Spray hair brushes and styling tools with an anti-static spray such as Static Guard. Finish your look with an anti-frizz serum marketed under names like Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine or TRESemme Anti-Frizz, or rub your hair with a dryer sheet to add just enough moisture to your hair to prevent static.

    Home

Reduce the static in your home by running a humidifier in the winter, specifically in the rooms where you spend most of your time. Keep a humidifier in the bedroom to prevent static buildup in your hair before styling in the morning. Spray the inside of your coat and hat to keep your hair and clothing static-free.

    Maintenance

Keep a can of static spray or a small package of dryer sheets in your car or at your desk at work. Spray or rub your hair on breaks or at lunch to keep your hair from building up a static charge.
