Dark circles under children's eyes might look alarming, but they usually are not a cause for concern.
The Facts
Dark circles are usually a dark bluish color and are more prominent in fair-skinned children. The dark circles are sometimes referred to as allergic shiners.
Common Cause
The primary cause of dark circles in children is from nasal congestion. When functioning normally, the eye veins drain into the nose veins. When the nasal passage is blocked, the veins under the eyes become larger and darker.
Other Causes
Other causes are lack of sleep and poor nutrition. Enlarged adenoids will block the nasal passage, also causing dark circles. Sometimes genetics play a role; dark circles can run in families.
Treatment
Your child's doctor will suggest treatment options based on the cause. Keeping nasal passages clear will help eye veins drain properly. If adenoids are enlarged, they might need to be surgically removed.
Warning
Always talk to your doctor as seemingly harmless symptoms can be a sign of a more serious health condition. If dark circles are sudden, along with weight loss or other skin discoloration, see a health-care provider immediately.
