  • Getting a new computer is exciting, and you may be tempted to rush through setup and get going. Take the time to set it up properly, though, to avoid problems right from the start. Take a few minutes to set up your new HP Compaq computer the right way to ensure a smooth and safe computing.

    Peripherals

Connect all of the basic peripherals--mouse, keyboard, monitor and speakers--before turning your computer on for the first time. If you purchased a printer, scanner, webcam or other device with your HP Compaq computer, do not connect them now. Wait until you get the computer fully set up before connecting these devices. You will need to set up these devices individually, following the manufacturer's instructions for each individual device.

    Restore Discs

HP Compaq computers have a method to allow you to make a set of restore discs that you can use to restore your computer to factory settings in the event of a hardware or software failure. Click "Start," "All Programs," "Recovery Manager," then "Recovery Disk Creation." You will need approximately two DVD+Rs or DVD-Rs for this operation. Keep these discs in a safe place--your HP Compaq computer will allow you to make a single set only, and they are invaluable in the event of hard drive failure.

    Antivirus

HP Compaq generally includes a free trial offer for an anti-virus program so you can use that free trial if you desire--just make sure to run the set-up for the program before connecting to the Internet for the first time. If you choose not to use the free trial antivirus software, have a disc ready with your desired antivirus program when you first turn on your computer. Do not connect your computer to any networks or the Internet until you have antivirus software installed. HP Compaq computers, like all computers when first built or purchased, will not have adequate updates in place and as a result are vulnerable to viruses and spyware. Once you connect to the Internet, download and install all updates and current virus signatures to protect your computer from threats.

    Updates

When you first connect to the Internet, open Internet Explorer and go to Windows Update by pressing Alt-T and choosing Windows Update. Install all of the critical updates at the very least, restarting when requested. This is essential to protecting your computer from vulnerabilities. You can do this simultaneously with updating your antivirus--just don't restart your computer for one while the other is still downloading and installing!
