According to the ABC News article "Is Your Child's Booster Seat Safe?", children riding in a booster seat are 45 percent less likely to be injured in a car crash than children riding in the seat alone. A booster seat is designed to allow adult seat belts to fit small children properly.

On the Other: Some Boosters are Better than Others

A study of 60 makes and models of booster seat by the Insurance Institute for High Safety found that only 15 of them got top ratings. Of the group, 11 were not recommended for use by parents. The best seats allowed the adult seat belts to fit correctly on a child regardless of the model of the car, while the worst seats caused the belt to sit too high on the waist or too low across the chest.

    Bottom Line

Booster seats do work to increase the safety of your child riding in a car, but do your research before you buy a booster. Even the best quality seats can be found for as little as $20, as of early 2010. Alternatively, car seats designed for older children are even more secure, as they attach to the car itself and cannot slide around during a crash.
