When did last names come to be commonplace? Or when did identifying someone change from John the Butcher's son to John Butcher? Or Jack the carpenter to Jack Carpenter etc?

how about Jahsuah ben Joseph 2000 years ago. my guess would be that any time that the pop density gets to and remains high enough to to have 3 generations of people active with the same trade and the same first name or back to the guild system in Europe, when your trade was no longer the same as your fathers.
