Antidepressant drugs, such as Lexapro and Zoloft, increase serotonin levels in the brain, thereby increasing the stimulation of nerve cells that lead to a more balanced mood.
SSRIs
Both Lexapro and Zoloft function as serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, and are effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety.
Side Effects
Side effects for Lexapro include insomnia, drowsiness, nausea, sweating and a depressed libido. Side effects for Zoloft include similar symptoms to Lexapro plus diarrhea, tremors and shifts in mood.
Drug Interactions
Those taking pimozide and sibutramine should not take Zoloft (setraline). Those prescribed Lexapro should not take Nardil or Parnante, which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Those administered Lexapro should also abstain from the antipsychotic prescription Orap.
Genetic History
Those with liver or kidney dysfunctions should disclose this information to the doctor before taking Lexapro and Zoloft. If you have a history of mania, seizures or bleeding problems, tell your doctor before you take Lexapro. Those with a history of suicidal thoughts or attempts or episodes of manic depression should consult the doctor as well.
Form
Zoloft can be ingested in liquid or pill form. Lexapro comes in pill form only.
