New England clam chowder has a cream base, while Manhattan clam chowder has a tomato base. Both chowders feature potatoes, often include salt pork or bacon (especially New England), and generally include other vegetables mixed in. A thick New England clam chowder made with heavy cream is sometimes called Maine style, and one with light cream or milk is sometimes called Rhode Island style.
