Beginning centuries ago in Turkey and other Middle Eastern countries, hookah lounges have spread to Europe and America and can be found in most major U.S. cities. Once a gathering spot for politics and social stimulation, hookah lounges have become a hot spot to enjoy fine cuisine, music and dancing and have been featured on TV reality shows.
History
Hookah pipes have been around for hundreds of years, probably originating in Persia or India. Haggar is the bowl that sits on the pipe. It is generally made of glass, though the first ones were made of coconut shells. Tobacco is smoked through the hose connected to the hookah.
Types
The tobacco used for hookah is flavored with ginger and honey to banana, blackberry, acai berry and blueberry. There are also hookah flavors that are entirely herbal and do not contain nicotine or tar.
Etiquette
Much of the etiquette is about respecting the people you are around. Because hookah is such a social outlet, simple things such as not blowing in the face of another and not sharing the mouthpiece are unwritten rules.
Additional Information
Socializing in a hookah lounge is an affordable night out. Tobacco can cost as little as $3 for 50 grams to $20 for 250 grams.
Warning
Smoking a hookah pipe is still a tobacco-related activity and carries with it all the same warnings as cigarettes. This is an adult activity and should be used in moderation.
