The Advent season, which is celebrated by Christians around the world, begins four Sundays prior to Christmas. Traditionally, it represents a time of expectancy and waiting for the birth of the Christ child. The Advent candles set within a wreath represent perpetual light and hope coming into a dark world. Lighting of Advent candles usually includes scripture and devotional readings.
Colors of Advent
The color of Advent has traditionally been purple. Purple represents the penitence of the season as well as the coming of royalty. This same color is used during the season of Lent. The color of purple connects Christ's birth and death.
The First Candle
The first purple candle, which is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, is the candle of hope. By lighting this candle people are recognizing Christ, the Messiah, as the hope of the world.
The Second Candle
The second purple candle, which is lit on the second Sunday of Advent, is the candle of love. During Advent, Christians remember God's gift of love revealed in the Christ Child.
The Third Candle
The third candle is a pink candle lit on the third Sunday of Advent. This is the candle of joy. It symbolizes that Jesus' coming brings joy to all.
The Fourth Candle
The fourth candle is purple and is lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent. It is the candle of peace. It foreshadows the message that the angels proclaimed at Christmas.
The Christ Candle
The Christ candle is a white candle and is placed in the center of the wreath. It symbolizes purity and hope. The Christ candle is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
