A number of product retailers, including Auto Anything, claim that a high efficiency air filters can improve a PT Cruiser's gas mileage. According to Auto Anything, replacing a standard paper air filter with a high air flow model will increase oxygen in the engine's combustion chamber, creating a more efficient combustion. In addition, PT Cruiser-specific website PTCruizer.com reports that some users have reported better mileage as a result of using high flow air filters.
On the Other: The Government Says No
FuelEconomy.gov, a website operated by the United States Government dedicated to provide gas mileage tips for more efficient driving, states that high efficiency air filters do improve performance somewhat, but do not improve gas mileage. The website cites a study performed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in which researchers found no noticeable mileage increase as a result of using a high efficiency air filter.
Bottom Line
Some users report better gas mileage in their PT cruisers after replacing standard air filters with high efficiency ones, but any increase is likely negligible.
