Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the colon characterized by diarrhea, pain, bloating and constipation. While these symptoms can be painful and inconvenient, IBS is not progressive and does not damage the large intestine. Many people with IBS experience worse symptoms in the morning.
Significance
According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), up to 20 percent of the American population is affected by irritable bowel syndrome.
Features
People with IBS most often experience diarrhea first thing in the morning or directly after eating a meal. Diarrhea is usually almost liquid and contains mucus.
Causes
While the cause of the syndrome is not certain, researchers believe that people with IBS have especially sensitive large intestines, according to NIDDK.
Function
According to the University of North Carolina's Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders, researchers found that cortisol levels are high in the morning and low in the evening in people with IBS.
Identification
Coritsol is a hormone excreted by the adrenal glands. When you are stressed, the glands excrete high levels of the hormone. Besides intestinal issues, high levels of cortisol can contribute to numerous other health issues.
