Colorists recommend a waiting period of at least a week between perm and color services. The waiting period gives hair time to rest and allows time for the curl to relax. New perms are sensitive. Hair dye could cause the curl to fall out if the service is performed to early. However, most back-to-back chemical services do not affect the curl, but result in excessive damage to the hair.

    On the Other: Rule Exceptions

Coarse, resistant, gray hair can normally withstand consecutive perm and color services. The chemicals actually condition and break down the hair, which makes it easier to manage and control. Low-peroxide color may be an option for most perm clients if the color change is not too dramatic. Root retouches are also possible since the color is applied mainly to the root area.

    Bottom Line

It is best to wait between chemical services. This rule is true for everyone. However, there are some exceptions to the rule that you can take advantage of if you must. Do not do so blindly. Apply the color to a small strand of hair and process it as you normally would to determine whether or not it is safe to proceed with the service.
