  • The typical response from many doctors when treating a urinary tract infection is simply to prescribe an antibiotic. Although this may work in the short term, it may not work long term, because the very bacteria you have killed will only grow stronger after each antibiotic use. Escherichia coli bacteria can survive and develop into a resistant breed that causes recurring bladder and urinary tract infections. In many instances you can successfully treat a bladder infection without antibiotics by using powerful home and natural remedies.

    Fluids

Cranberry juice is often recommended to combat bladder infections. It stops the E. coli bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls, which helps the infection heal more quickly, according to Dr. Steven J. Bock in the book "Alternative Cures." He recommends drinking three 8-ounce servings of cranberry juice a day. Avoid using brands that have been sweetened. While you are taking cranberry juice, drink plenty of water, as well. This will help to flush out the bladder and get rid of the infection. Aim to drink 64 ounces of water per day.

    Supplements

Various supplements can help you treat a bladder infection. Magnesium kills the bacteria and creates more alkaline urine. This action makes it harder for the E. coli bacteria to survive. Take 300 to 400 mg a day for the duration of your infection. Vitamin C and A and bioflavonoids help to strengthen the lining of the bladder. This makes it more difficult for the bacteria to stick to the surface. Bock recommends a daily dose of 1,000 to 4,000 mg of vitamin C, 300 to 600 mg of bioflavonoids and 50,000 international units of vitamin A. Only take this high dose of vitamin A under the direction of a doctor, and do not take for longer than a week.

    Herbs

Various herbs can soothe burning and irritation associated with a urinary tract infection. Goldenrod herbal tea is a gentle, stimulating tea that helps to relieve pain and burning experienced during a bladder infection. Drink three to four cups a day. Marshmallow provides a soothing mucilage in the urinary tract. Look for marshmallow root powder in most health food stores and make your own herbal drink. Soak one teaspoon of the root powder in one cup of cold water overnight and drink the solution one to three times a day for the duration of your infection. If you have more than two urinary tract infections in six month's time, see your physician. Always consult your physician if there is blood in your urine or if you are experiencing a high fever, vomiting or back pain.
