Many parents are dismayed to see their child develop dark circles under their eyes. In adults, dark eye circles are often an symptom of poor sleep, though in children they may represent a different issue.
Appearance
The blue or purple rings appear under the lower eyelid and circle the section below the eye to the cheek. For some children the rings appear at the end of the day, while others may wake up with rings under their eyes.
Identification
In children, the appearance of dark circles is usually a sign of nasal congestion associated with allergies, hay fever, colds or sinusitis.
Cause
Stuffiness may be due to an allergen in the home or outdoors, or he may be breathing through the mouth due to enlarged adenoids. The darkening of the skin under the eyes happens when veins from the eyes become blocked and more visible through the skin.
Considerations
Children with fair complexions may have more pronounced under-eye circles.
Insight
Treating the nasal infection or obstruction is the best way to correct and prevent under-eye circles, according to the Mayo Clinic.
