There are many reasons you should exercise even if you cannot lose weight. Exercise increases your overall health, for example, by increasing the strength of your heart, allowing it to pump more blood to all parts of your body. This stimulates the basic functions of all the systems of your body.
Heart health
Your heart is a smooth muscle that is strengthened with exercise. Exercise reduces blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and the risk of stroke and heart attack.
Muscles and joints
Exercise strengthens muscles, improves and maintains flexibility of both muscles and joints, and improves your balance. You may need to do low-impact exercises, such as water exercises, to reduce joint pain.
Bones
An increase in weight-bearing exercise can help reduce and rebuild bone mass loss and help repair bone fractures. Increased blood circulation also helps keep the bones healthy by building bone tissue.
Mental health
Exercise increases certain chemicals, called endorphins, in the brain. These help relieve pain and also help prevent depression by maintaining a healthy chemical balance in your body.
Other benefits
Exercise helps the body use energy more efficiently, which improves your digestion, sleep pattern, coordination, posture, immune system and general feeling of well-being. Also, increased muscle mass helps your body burn calories.
