<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Acupressure points
Sea-Bands place a small amount of targeted pressure on the wrist through a bracelet with a button on it. This remedy for travel sickness is based on traditional Chinese medicine, which uses acupressure points to cure disease and balance a person's energies. The wrist pressure point is thought to relieve nausea.
On the Other: Slim evidence
Clinical trials showing the effectiveness of Sea-Bands are not numerous. A 2001 Grand Valley State University school of nursing study in Michigan found that, in a small group of pregnant women, using the bands helped reduce morning sickness. Other research also indicates acupressure at the wrist point decreases nausea, for reasons yet unknown.
Bottom Line
Sea-Bands appeal to pregnant women, cancer patients and others who wish to avoid added drugs. For those who dislike medications or need additional nausea remedies, there is reason to try the bands; they are not harmful in any way, and there is some evidence for their effectiveness.
