<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Tap Water Can Taste Odd
Tap water may contain chemicals like chlorine that change its flavor. Other contaminants like rust and lime scale may also enter water. Refrigerator filters can remove chemicals and solids, resulting in pure, cold water. Filters also increase fridge life by removing blockages.
On the Other: Not All Filters Are Effective
Not all filters are equally effective. The best are those that combine various tools against water contaminants. (For example, they need a filter to catch materials like rust and another to remove harmful chemicals.) They are also not cheap, starting at around $40. Heavy users may need to replace filters every three months, though six months is normal.
Bottom Line
If you drink bottled water, fridge filters may save you money. (If you buy three 12-packs of bottled water at $3 per week, $9 total, you would spend around $108 over 12 weeks; compare to the cost of your filter.) If you don't like the taste of tap water coming in through your fridge, filters will help.
