All Internet domain names are given a two-, three- or four-letter extension upon registration. This designation implies the purpose of the domain name. Currently, more than 50 domain names exist for the Internet.
Common Names
The most common domain names are .com for commercial enterprises, .net for network or Internet service providers, and .org for charitable or nonprofit groups.
For Business
Businesses often use .biz, .info and .bz, which was originally the country code of Belize. Small businesses that can't get their domain name under .biz will often use the .bz extension.
For Media
Content rich digital media web sites prefer to use .tv for entertainment sites, .mobi for mobile phone viewing, or .ws, another code for websites.
Countries
Each country has its own domain name. Examples are .us for United States, .uk for United Kingdom, .eu for the European Union and .cn for China.
Government and Education
Only government websites are allowed to use the .gov designation, and only educational institutions and organizations can use the .edu name.
