The haemophilus influenza bacteria (Hib) used to account for the bacterial meningitis cases in the United States, according to Alan Greene. However, since the introduction of a vaccine for Hib in 1988, the number of infections have dropped significantly.
History
Although the name sounds very similar to the virus that causes the flu, Hib is actually a type of bacteria discovered before the influenza virus.
Significance
While Hib can affect anyone, it is most commonly seen in young children. Common symptoms of a Hib infection include infections of the sinuses and the ears.
Function
People pass the Hib bacteria from one to another by coughing, direct contact and exchange of body fluids.
Prevention/Solution
The Hib bacteria can be prevented by the vaccine. In most cases, good hygiene can prevent most spread. If you are in close contact with someone with a Hib infection, antibiotics are recommended, according to Dr. Greene.
Treatment
People with Hib are treated with antibiotics, as with other bacterial infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3 to 6 percent of the cases are fatal.
